Custom Notebook – Eryngium horridum

This design was created for a very special gift: a custom notebook from a botanical researcher for a mentored student, to celebrate their graduation.

They had both worked together on a research project that focused on the ecology of the plant species Eryngium horridum, a native apiaceae from South America.

The first step was gathering many reference images in order to start the draft. Luckily, there were several photos the researcher had taken himself, as well as other members of his team.

Then I prepared the first draft to be approved before I started adding colour and textures.

The commision required to show the whole plant, to which I later decided to add a couple flower visitors and pollinators to highlight the numerous interactions of this species.

After the finished illustration was approved, I handcrafted a dotted notebook with textured paper on the covers and also printed a full size illustration for the researcher.
